Part
The two spring types fail differently. Neither one is a home project.
A torsion spring is the coil on the shaft above the door. An extension spring is the coil that stretches along the horizontal track. Both store the energy that lifts the slab. When one breaks, that energy is loose. People are hurt trying to wind a replacement or to force the door up. We will not walk you through those steps.
What you can see safely from the floor: a gap in the coil above the door, a spring hanging off the track, or a loud bang and a door that suddenly feels enormous. Stop the opener. Keep people away.
A pair of torsion springs is common on a double door. An older single often has extension springs. The technician decides what the opening actually has. Replacing one spring of a pair is an on-site judgment, not a rule published here. After the work, the door should move without the opener dragging a dead weight.
Above the door is torsion. Along the tracks is extension.
Springs are installed on a visit. They are not a mailed part.
