In short. A broken spring makes the door dangerously heavy. Do not wind it, and do not keep running the opener.
The springs, not the opener, carry most of a garage door's weight. When a torsion spring on the shaft snaps, or an extension spring along the track lets go, that weight comes back. People get hurt trying to wind a replacement or to force the door up. We will not publish those steps.
What you can do is ordinary and safe: stop using the opener, keep people away from the door, and call.
Torsion and extension springs are different parts. Both are technician work. After replacement the door is balanced so it does not fall and so the opener is not dragging a dead weight. Same-day service is offered when the schedule allows. Call for hours.
MassGarage is family owned, with 25 years in the trade. Elad is a technician on our crew. wrote that he fixed a snapped cable. This note is general information. It is not a license and not a repair procedure.
Leave it up and keep people clear. Call (781) 602-0737. We will not describe a way to lower a door with a broken spring.
The technician looks at the pair on site and says whether one spring or both should be changed.
