The common residential door: a steel skin, sometimes insulated, chosen on the estimate.
Most replacement doors people ask for are steel. A steel skin resists a casual dent better than a thin non-metal skin and holds up in weather, with limits. On the coast, salt still marks hardware and can stain a door face. Inland, the issues are dents, fading, and springs sized for the weight.
Gauge means the thickness of the steel. Ask what gauge is on the door in the estimate. Insulation, windows, and color are the same conversation.
A dent in one section does not always mean a new steel door. Panel replacement exists for a section that can be matched. If the skin is rusted through or the sections are twisted, replacement is the other path.
Installation is measured, installed, and adjusted, with old-door haul-away stated on the installation service. The springs are set to the new weight. Call for a free estimate.
